Where dogs run free and homes have room to roam.

Northeast Texas is dog country. Wide-open spaces, quiet roads, fenced acreage, and a community that treats your four-legged family like their own.

For Dog Owners

Why Northeast Texas
is dog country.

If you have ever watched a dachshund sprint across a wide-open backyard with the confidence of an Olympic sprinter, you already understand what makes Northeast Texas special. This is a place where dogs are not just tolerated. They are celebrated.

Out here in Lamar County and the surrounding region, properties come with real space. We are talking about acreage where your dog can explore safely, fenced yards that actually work, and quiet roads where morning walks feel peaceful instead of stressful.

The communities across our eight service counties, from Paris to Sherman, from Bonham to Cooper, are the kind of places where neighbors wave when you are out walking your dog. Where the local pet store knows your name. Where dog-friendly patios and outdoor events are part of the rhythm of life.

Shannon is the founder of the Dachshunds of Northeast Texas Facebook group, a growing community of local dachshund lovers who share photos, tips, meetups, and the kind of dachshund-specific wisdom that only fellow dachshund people understand. It started because Shannon wanted a place for local dachshund owners to connect, and it has grown into something genuinely fun.

As real estate agents, Shannon and Scott understand what dog owners actually need in a home. Fenced yards with proper gate latches. Floor plans that make pet cleanup easy. Properties with enough room for a big dog to run or a small dog like a dachshund to sniff every square inch at their own pace. Proximity to parks, trails, and vet offices. They listen for the things dog owners care about because they care about them too.

Buyer's Guide

What to look for
when buying a home
as a dog owner.

Your dog's needs matter just as much as your own. Here is what we help our clients evaluate when finding the right home for the whole family, paws included.

A Fenced Yard That Actually Works

Not all fences are created equal. For small dogs like dachshunds, you need a fence with no gaps at the bottom where a determined low-rider can squeeze through. Chain link, wrought iron, and privacy fences each have different strengths. We walk the property line with you and point out every weak spot before you sign.

Yard Size and Terrain

A flat, grassy backyard is a dream for small breeds who like to patrol their territory. Large active breeds benefit from acreage with varied terrain for exploration. Northeast Texas delivers both. We help you find properties where the land fits your dog's personality and energy level.

Hardwood, Tile, and Easy Cleanup

Tile, luxury vinyl plank, and hardwood floors are a dog owner's best friend. They handle muddy paws, shedding, and the occasional accident far better than carpet. When we tour homes, we pay attention to flooring transitions, durability, and which rooms will hold up best under real pet traffic.

Proximity to Vets, Parks, and Pet Stores

In Paris and the surrounding communities, you are never far from a trusted vet, a pet supply store, or a green space where your dog can stretch their legs. We know which neighborhoods have the best access and which roads are safest for daily walks.

Acreage and Safe Boundaries

If you want your dog to have room to truly run, acreage is the answer. We help buyers understand lot dimensions, fencing requirements for rural properties, and how to create safe, contained outdoor spaces on larger parcels. No more worrying about traffic or strangers passing by.

HOA Pet Policies to Watch For

Some HOAs have breed restrictions, weight limits, or limits on the number of pets. We review CC&Rs and HOA documents with a careful eye on the fine print that affects pet owners, so there are no surprises after you move in.

Nearby Trails, Parks, and Dog-Friendly Spots

The Trail de Paris offers miles of paved, pet-friendly walking and biking through some of the city's prettiest scenery. Dog parks, green spaces, and pet-friendly patios round out the lifestyle. We help you find a home that puts all of this within easy reach, whether you are in Paris, Sherman, or a quieter rural community.

Dog-friendly spots
across the region.

Northeast Texas is full of places where your dog is welcome, not just tolerated. From dedicated off-leash parks to scenic trails and pet-friendly patios, this region makes it easy to include your dog in the everyday rhythms of life.

Here are a few of our favorite spots:

Dog Park at Love's Travel Stop

A fully fenced off-leash dog park on North Main Street in Paris, complete with waste stations and shade. A great spot for a quick run or a social visit with other dogs.

Trail de Paris

A scenic, paved, non-motorized trail that welcomes leashed dogs. It winds through some of the city's most beautiful areas and is perfect for morning walks or afternoon strolls with your four-legged companion.

Rural Trails and Country Roads

The county roads and rural properties across Lamar, Fannin, and surrounding counties offer miles of quiet walking with your dog. Many of our clients buy acreage properties specifically so their dogs have room to explore in a natural setting.

Pet-Friendly Patios and Local Events

Several restaurants and coffee shops around the Paris square and in surrounding towns welcome well-behaved dogs on their patios. Community events, farmers markets, and seasonal festivals often include dog-friendly areas too.

Community Spotlight

Dachshunds of
Northeast Texas.

Shannon started the Dachshunds of Northeast Texas Facebook group because she wanted a place for local dachshund lovers to connect. What began as a simple idea has grown into a vibrant, fun community of dachshund owners across the region who share photos, stories, training tips, and plenty of dachshund attitude.

If you are a dachshund owner in Northeast Texas, or anywhere nearby, this group is for you. It is the kind of place where you can post a picture of your wiener dog in a costume and get forty comments of encouragement.

Beyond the Facebook group, Shannon brings her dachshund knowledge to her real estate practice. She understands the specific needs of dachshund owners when it comes to homes and properties: low fencing thresholds, smooth flooring for little legs, yard layouts that keep small dogs safe, and homes that do not have steep stairs or dangerous drop-offs.

Fun dachshund facts for the region: Dachshunds were originally bred to hunt badgers and other burrowing animals. Their long bodies and short legs were designed for digging into tunnels. In Northeast Texas, where the soil is rich and the land is varied, these instincts are right at home.

Community Event

The August Project.

Mark your calendars, Northeast Texas. The August Project is a pet adoption event coming to the Shannon Miles Group office parking lot in August 2026. The exact date is still coming together, but the mission is simple: connect adoptable dogs with loving families.

This event is personal for us. Shannon is the founder of the Dachshunds of Northeast Texas Facebook group, and she has seen firsthand how many incredible dogs in our region are waiting for a forever home. The August Project is our way of bringing the community together to make a real difference, one adoption at a time.

Bring the family. Bring your leashed dog. Walk through the parking lot, meet the adoptable pups, and find your new best friend. Local rescue partners will be on-site with dogs of all sizes, breeds, and personalities. There will be wagging tails, warm introductions, and hopefully a whole lot of happy endings.

We are hosting this right at our storefront at 2322 Lamar Ave. in Paris, TX, because this is what our community is all about. Good neighbors showing up for each other, and for the dogs who need us most.

Date and time details are coming soon. Follow the Shannon Miles Group on social media to stay in the loop and be the first to know when the final date drops.

"Every dog deserves a chance. The August Project is our way of giving back to the community that has given us so much. We cannot wait to see you there."
